What Happens If Your WOF Expires in New Zealand?

A Warrant of Fitness isn’t optional in New Zealand, and letting it lapse can create problems fast. If your WOF has expired, this blog explains what it means for your driving, your wallet and your insurance, plus how to sort it out with Mt Roskill.

Is It Legal to Drive With an Expired WOF?

No. Once your WOF has expired, your vehicle is no longer legal to drive on New Zealand roads, with one exception.

  • You may drive directly to a garage for a WOF test, provided the vehicle is safe to be on the road.
  • You cannot run errands, take a detour, or use the trip for anything other than getting the vehicle tested.
  • There is no grace period. Fines can apply from the day your WOF expires, whether your car is moving or simply parked on the street.

What’s the Fine for an Expired WOF?

The current infringement fee for driving with an expired WOF is $200, issued by police or parking wardens. From 1 November 2026, this will rise to $350 if your WOF has been expired for more than two months, under NZTA’s updated vehicle inspection rules.

*Correct as at August 2026; fees and rules can change, so it’s worth booking your renewal promptly rather than risking the higher cost later.

Can an Expired WOF Affect Your Insurance?

An expired WOF doesn’t automatically cancel your car insurance, but it does complicate a claim. Many policies treat a valid WOF as a condition of cover, and insurers may look more closely at a claim and could reduce or decline your payout if the lapse (or the fault that would have failed your WOF) contributed to the incident.

*This is general information rather than insurance advice, so check your own policy wording or ask your insurer directly.

What to Do If Your WOF Has Expired

Sorting an expired WOF is straightforward if you act quickly.

  • Check your WOF label for the exact expiry date, or look it up on NZTA’s online checker.
  • Book a WOF check as soon as possible. Most checks take 30 to 60 minutes, and coordinating it with a regular service can save you a second trip.
  • Drive directly to your chosen garage, with no stops along the way.
  • If your vehicle fails, ask for a clear breakdown of what’s required and the cost before authorising any repairs.

You could be fined $200 on the spot, whether you’re driving or parked. The only legal reason to be on the road is a direct trip to a garage for testing. As mentioned above, from 1 November 2026, this is due to rise to $350 if your WOF has been expired for over 2 months.

No. Fines can apply from the day your WOF expires.

Generally yes, but the vehicle needs a WOF issued no more than one month before you hand it over to the buyer. Check out the government’s Selling a Vehicle page for official guidelines.

A current WOF is often treated as a condition of cover, so check your policy wording, particularly if the fault that would have failed your WOF played a part in the incident.
